LOST – The Rebirth and Death of the Mystery Serial

Posted on April 13, 2012, under Uncategorized.

Back in the day, the mystery serial was a risky and, often times, desperate maneuver that many people just were not willing to try. A mystery serial was composed of a series of episodes that were all inextricably connected with the plots and the relationships and the twists lasting entire seasons and, sometimes, the entire run of the show. They required tremendous amounts of work on the part of both the producers and the people at home who were watching. Producers had to stick to strict continuity and viewers could not afford to miss a single episode. It was television with some effort involved and many people abandoned the format after some rare successes and a few too many failures – then came LOST.

LOST was riding high after the acclaim and fall of mystery serials like Twin Peaks and V, but it also taught us what a thinking man’s television show should be like. People could not get enough of this show from the adrenaline-fueled premise of a group of survivors on a mysterious island to the jaw-dropping writing and twists that were hiding around every corner. You never knew what was coming and you dreaded those commercials for other shows, home security or even www.ShopElectricityRatesTexas.com because you knew something was about to happen and these commercial breaks were agonizing breaks in action. LOST came and went in a blazing ball of brilliance that died and cooled toward the finale. In many ways, it breathed new life into the mystery serial genre, but then ultimately imploded under its own weight – doing irreparable harm to the serial genre’s reputation.
